In 1998, the private rail franchise Ferromex took over the railroad from the Mexican government. Ferromex has made a significant investment in a total modernization program. The train track has been repaired and brought up to industry standards. Chihuahua al Pacifico, is one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring rail journeys in the Western Hemisphere, maybe the world. The rail trip from Los Mochis to Chihuahua has 36 major bridges and 87 tunnels. The train follows a tortuous route from sea level to a maximum elevation of more than 8,000 feet at its highest point.
